Occasionally, network connections fail due to a local or regional power outage, severe weather, fiber/DSL/cable routing issues, or even a cyberattack on a carrier’s infrastructure or DNS servers. In these situations, having a dynamic IP network failover to a cellular provider is an effective backup strategy—even if the available bandwidth is lower. Most of the time the cellular link remains idle, but when it is needed, it can be a critical business lifesaver.

We install and configure devices that allow IP networks to automatically switch to 4G or 5G cellular connectivity when the primary cable, DSL, or fiber connection goes down. These devices continuously monitor the main Internet link and, if it fails, reroute traffic to one, two, or even four cellular carriers—selecting the strongest available signal to restore connectivity. The same hardware can also fail over to Starlink satellite service if the customer chooses.

For customers using an IP PBX that supports SIP voice trunks from a provider separate from their Internet service, SIP voice traffic can dynamically reroute from the SIP trunk provider directly to the customer’s IP PBX. This restores voice lines and extensions during an ISP outage and provides independence from bundled ISP voice services.

However, if the ISP supplies analog voice lines to the IP PBX, those analog lines cannot reroute through a cellular carrier or LEO satellite provider. For this reason, using SIP trunking for all lines—except fire and security phone lines—offers a more resilient and flexible approach.
